Why reuse?
It goes without saying, eco-friendly packaging is at the forefront of everyone’s minds these days and with the ever-growing list of marketing buzz words being created faster than anyone can keep up with, it’s hard to know what is actually green and what’s just ‘green marketing’.
Glass is widely accepted to be a better alternative to plastic - both environmentally and for our health - but what a lot of us don’t consider is - is recycling even always necessary?
It’s not a new concept and I’m sure anyone who grew up with milk delivered from a milkman can tell you, there is beauty in the simplicity of reusing. Reusing glass bottles have three main advantages:
It saves energy - We all know recycling is more environmentally friendly than sending an item to landfill, but with recycling comes energy use. To recycle a glass bottle, a lot of energy and water needs to be used, which can be completely avoided.
It saves room - I’m sure most of us by now have wheely bins that are collected once a fortnight, and know the frustration that comes when you’ve filled up your bin before the first week is even over. Glass bottles have the disadvantage in this situation, of not being able to be flattened like plastic to save room, so reusing the bottles will stop that bin from unnecessarily overflowing.
It saves money - The materials are bought and made once and other than the occasional top up, reusing is going to be much cheaper for the supplier and in turn the consumer, by not having this ongoing cost.
Crag are leading the way to what we hope is a more sustainable Britain, starting with one of the most fundamental needs, water - with the hope that reuse can seep into other aspects of our daily life and help reduce waste.
